Squaw Mountain opened for skiing in December 1963 with a Hall T-bar climbing 600ft. and servicing 4 trails. The following season, a second Hall T-bar was installed some 250ft. up the mountain to serve a novice slope. It wasn’t until 1967 that Big Squaw Mountain installed it’s first chairlift, a Thompson double by Stadeli, bringing skiers to the area’s new summit. The Thompson Double increased the vertical drop to 1,700ft and made Squaw the second largest ski area in Maine at the time. Before the 1987 season a Borvig Triple chair, the Donaher Triple, replaced the original 1963 T-bar. Squaw was operated by five different groups between 1987 and 1994 before James Confalone purchased the ski area in 1995. Confalone operated the ski area until 2010. After several years of inactivity, The Friends of Squaw Mountain was founded to give this mountain new life as a non-profit ski area. The trails have not changed much at all since the 1960s, lending the mountain both a rich heritage and a classic New England feel.
